Drum / Barrel Pump FAQs
-
A drum or barrel pump is a device designed to transfer liquids from large containers such as drums, barrels, or IBCs. They allow controlled dispensing of fluids like chemicals, oils, and food products without lifting or tipping the container
-
Drum pumps can handle a wide range of liquids depending on their design and materials, including:
- Chemicals and solvents
- Acids and alkalis
- Oils and lubricants
- Food-grade liquids (e.g., syrups, juices)
- Cleaning solutions
Our Technical Sales Team would check the pump material is chemically compatible with the liquid when handling your enquiry.
-
Available materials include:
- Polypropylene (PP) – good chemical resistance
- PVDF – suitable for aggressive chemicals
- Stainless steel – durable and food or chemical compatible
- Aluminium – lightweight industrial use
Material choice depends on the liquid being pumped.
-
Yes, but the pump must be designed for high-viscosity fluids. Some pump configurations are specifically designed for thicker liquids such as oils, grease, syrups, gels or resins.
-
For flammable or explosive liquids, use ATEX-certified or explosion-proof pumps. These pumps are designed to reduce ignition risks in hazardous environments.
-
Flow rates vary widely depending on pump type and duty parameters, but you can expect anything from 10 – 150 litres per minute.
-
Most drum pumps are easy to install:
- Insert the pump tube into the drum.
- Secure it with the drum adapter or bung fitting.Â
- Attach the discharge hose or nozzle.
- Connect the power source (electric or pneumatic).
-
Regular maintenance includes:
- Cleaning after use
- Inspecting seals and gaskets
- Checking hoses and fittings
- Lubricating moving parts if required
- Storing properly when not in use
Proper maintenance helps extend pump life and prevent leaks.
-
Yes, certain drum pumps made from stainless steel or FDA-approved materials are suitable for food and beverage processing.
-
Most pumps are designed for standard 200-litre (55-gallon) drums, but many models can also be used with 20–60 litre containers, 100–220 litre drums and IBCs.
-
Common accessories include:
- Discharge hoses
- Nozzles and flow meters
- Drum adapters
- Grounding kits for flammable liquids
- Foot strainer
-
We can provide several options to suit: 110V single phase, 240V single phase, 400V three phase or compressed air.
