There is a standard for the manufacture of thermoplastic tanks, it's the

European Plastic Tank Standard EN 12573:2000

Chem Resist Europe produces the largest corrosion resistant all-thermoplastic spiral-wound Polypropylene and High-Density Polyethylene vertical cylindrical storage vessels, with diameters up to 4 metres and capacities up to 100m³.

Historically Thermoplastic Tanks have been restricted to low volume applications due to the ageing manufacturing methods used.

Sheet built tanks take standard extruded thermoplastic sheets and weld them vertically and horizontally using a combination of welding techniques and cold forming to produce a single or multiple layer cylinder. The low strength of these welding techniques limits single cylinder wall thickness to 12mm.

It is often necessary to produce multiple layers of cylinder in order to attain the design base wall thickness of the tank. Leakage between the layers due to differential expansion of the layers can often result in the full hydraulic load of the tank contents being exerted on the single thin outer layer with potentially disastrous results.

The new European Standard EN 12573:2000 now restricts this method of manufacture to a maximum of two layers.

However there is an alternative...

For more than 14 years Chem Resist has been producing Thermoplastic Tanks using its Spiral Wind technique. The process essentially takes an extruded bandage of thermoplastic and wraps it around a metal former, by either traversing the rotating former or the extruder. This operation is repeated as many times as is required to attain the design wall thickness of the cylinder.

The major benefit of this process is that it produces a seamless homogenous cylinder which is considered to have no welds and hence a considerable reduction in required wall thickness.

At last in the field of corrosive liquid storage the new Pan European standard EN 12573:2000 provides engineers with a comprehensive design allowing design and construction detail to be verified, increasing application opportunity and confidence in the specification of thermoplastic tanks.

Chem Resist Europe produces in the UK and Czech Republic allowing us to offer a consistent supply to customer's plants in the UK and Continental Europe.

Chem Resist design and manufacture a full range of process equipment from small day tanks through to fully automated chemical blending systems and tank farms and SCADA control throughout.
